Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu FAQs

Can I start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as an adult with no experience?

Yes. Most adults who walk into a BJJ gym have never done martial arts. You do not need any background, flexibility, or athletic history. Beginner classes at The Connection Academy in Denver start with fundamentals, and you are paired with experienced students who guide you through each movement.

Do I need to be in shape before I start?

No. You get in shape by training, not before. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu meets you at your current fitness level and improves your conditioning, strength, and mobility over time. Coaches scale drills to what you can do, and you set your own pace during your first weeks on the mat.

What should I wear to my first BJJ class?

It depends on the class. For a gi class you wear the traditional jacket, pants, and belt, and many gyms lend a gi to beginners. For a no-gi class you wear a rash guard and shorts or leggings. For a trial, fitted athletic clothing with no pockets or zippers works. Ask us about loaner gear.

What is the difference between gi and no-gi Jiu-Jitsu?

The gi is the traditional uniform of jacket, pants, and belt, while no-gi is trained in shorts and a rash guard. Gi training is often slower and more technical because of the grips the fabric allows. No-gi is faster and more athletic. Beginners benefit from both, and we will point you to the right starting class.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe, or will I get injured?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a controlled, technique-based art with a built-in safety system: you tap to signal stop, and your partner releases immediately. Serious injuries are uncommon with good coaching and a beginner-friendly culture. You train at your own intensity, and our coaches supervise drilling and rolling to keep new students safe.

What happens in a first BJJ class?

Expect a warm-up with basic movements like hip escapes and rolls, then technique instruction, then light drilling with a partner. Beginners are often paired with higher-ranked students who guide them through the techniques. You will not be thrown into hard sparring on day one, and you can ask questions throughout.

How often should I train as a beginner?

Two to three classes per week is a good target for beginners to build rhythm and confidence. Consistency drives progress more than long, occasional sessions. Starting with two classes a week and adding a third as you adjust is a sustainable way to improve without overtaxing your body early on.

Am I too old to start Jiu-Jitsu?

No. Adults start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. You control the intensity, choose your training partners, and progress at your own pace. Many older students train for fitness, stress relief, and self-defense rather than competition, and a good academy will match you with partners at a comparable level.
